The 2014 Walk for Wellness Challenge is open to all faculty and staff (undergrad and grad students are permitted to enroll). Please follow these steps to complete your registration.

Program Description

Individuals and department teams of 5 will walk for at least 20 minutes per day for up to 5 days per week (Monday-Friday) in either one of the 3 designated Wellness Walking Zones (WWZ) – Chesapeake Building Loop, Reckord Armory Gym or Cole Fieldhouse – and log the time in and out.  The program coordinator, Kristin Legg, will maintain records for all participants. There are no mileage or speed requirements, but participants are encouraged to walk as briskly as possible to achieve cardiorespiratory health benefits.

Benefits Office, Chesapeake Building

  • No locker/shower facilities. 
  • Water fountain in lobby.
  • The Walk for Wellness log book will be available at the UHR- Benefits Office. 
  • The office will be open Monday-Friday from 7:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

Reckord Armory Gym

  • No locker/shower facilities.
  • Water fountain in lobby.
  • The Walk for Wellness log book and safety support will be available at the CRS Intramural Sports Office service desk. 
  • The office will be open Monday-Friday from 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

Cole Fieldhouse

  • Limited locker/shower facilities. 
  • Water fountains on concourse.
  • The Walk for Wellness log book and safety support will be available in the Facility Manager’s Office in Cole Fieldhouse (concourse level).
  • The office will be open Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

Chapel Garden of Reflection & Remembrance/Labyrinth

  • Sign in at Chapel Side Lobby
  • The office will be open Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

Individual Participants Point Structure

 

Team Point Structure  

  • 5 points will be awarded for 20 minutes
  • 10 points will be awarded for 30 minutes of walking
  • 15 points will be awarded for 45 minutes of walking
  • 20 points will be awarded for 60 minutes of walking
  • A maximum of 20 points (60 minutes of walking) may be earned on any single day.
  • Time spent walking from your building to the WWZ may not be counted.
  • Participants will be considered to have dropped out if they have not logged in at least once in a 2-week period.
  • The top ten point earners at 6pm on March 7th will be entered into a raffle for the challenge prize.
 
 
  • Each team must have 5 members and cannot have more than 5 members.
  • At least 4 team members must be employed by the same UMD department.
  • Departments may enter more than one team.
  • Teams must have a team name.
  • Team members may walk together at the same time or individually at different times.
  • Every member of the team must walk at least 5 days per month.
  • 5 points will be awarded for 20 minutes
  • 10 points will be awarded for 30 minutes of walking
  • 15 points will be awarded for 45 minutes of walking
  • 20 points will be awarded for 60 minutes of walking
  • A maximum of 20 points/ per team member may be earned on any single day. A maximum of 100 points/ per team may be earned on any single day.
  • The team having the highest point total at 6pm on March 7th will be awarded the team Walk for Wellness prize.
  • If more than one team is tied for the overall lead, a team “walk-off” will be scheduled for the week of March 10th -14th to determine the overall winning team.
  •  Participants must be currently employed UM faculty/staff (undergrad and graduate students are permitted to enroll).
  • Participants must be prepared to present a UM ID card for access to indoor walking facilities.
  • Participants are only permitted to register as an individual or team, not both.
  •  Participants and teams must register for the program – either online www.crs.umd.edu or in person at the ERC Member Services Desk.
  • Participants may register at anytime between January 2nd and January 24th.
  • Participants (team and individual) must read, sign, and submit via campus mail to Kristin Legg the Walk for Wellness Release and Informed Consent Statement prior to earning any points.
  • Participants may walk anytime between 7am-2pm at the Chesapeake Building Loop and log time at the UHR Benefits Office; 8:30am-6pm at Cole Fieldhouse and 10am-6pm at Reckord Armory on weekdays.
  •  Logging your walking time in the binder is a requirement for points to count. Participants must sign in and out at a designated Walk for Wellness service centers and cannot email points. Failure to log in and out will result in zero points earned for that day.
  • All of these facilities/offices may be closed on certain days for special events. The program administrator will try to send email notification prior to the closure.
  • The program ends at 6pm on March 7th.  Winners will be announced on March 12th.
  • Requests for rule exceptions must be presented to the program coordinator, Kristin Legg (klegg@umd.edu).  Her ruling will be final (no appeals).
  • The overall Walk for Wellness individual winner will receive Noodles and Company meals for a year (one per month) AND a heart rate monitor.
  • The overall Walk for Wellness team winner will receive a group lunch from Noodles and Company, a private group fitness class of their choice and each person will receive a pedometer.

  • Participation in CRS activities, including the use of facilities and equipment is completely voluntary.  There are risks and hazards, minor and serious, associated with participation in fitness activities. Participants voluntarily assume all responsibility and risk of loss, damage, illness, and/or injury to person or property associated with participation in the Walk for Wellness program.
  • Participants are advised to check with a medical professional before starting any exercise program. 
  • Walkers will not be directly supervised while walking. In the event of an emergency, call 911.
  • Participants are encouraged to dress appropriately and drink water before, during, and after exercise.
